I was invited to join a dynamic, fun, interesting group of women (Jinx, Carol, & Eileen) to walk segment #2 of the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT). In the summer of 2024 they started their walk at the northern tip of the Oregon coast at the mouth of the Columbia River and spent 4 days walking south to Manzanita. This year we started in Manzanita and walked 4 days south to Cascade Head.

OK, first we had to jump a dead battery on one of the cars!
Then we got to start walking!

Day 1 – Manzanita to Garibaldi (15 miles). We walked south past Nehalem Bay State Park and then came to our first boat excursion across Nehalem Bay. With a quick call to Jetty Fishery they sent a boat to pick us up and deliver us to our lunch stop at, in fact, Jetty Fishery. We enjoyed a lunch of fresh Dungeness crab with corn. I was in heaven!

The OCT offers many walking experiences including railroad tracks, soft sand, hard sand, trails, and roads

Walk away from Jetty Fishery towards Rockaway Beach

We walked down the beach to Barview Jetty County Park and walked more railroad tracks to Garibaldi.

We were told that we can easily jump off the tracks to safety if a train comes along!

Garibaldi has a lovely marina and we stayed at the clean and tidy Harbor View Inn and RV Park across from it.

Dinner at the local pizza restaurant was a 4 minute walk from our hotel. We got confirmation from “Valeri” (owner) at the Garibaldi Marina that they “had enough staff” set for Tuesday morning, day #2, to give us an 8 a.m. ride across Tillamook Bay to the Bayocean Spit!

Day #1 felt like a perfect day! Thank you wonderful universe!

Wow! So idyllic with fresh seafood, boat rides, beaches, nice people, healthy feet and beautiful weather!

  2. so jealous! my happy place – if you want to journey that again, would love to join. look amazing Karen – quite the hiker you are!

      1. I have biked from Manzanita to Garibaldi a number of times, but have never walked it. Quite different to be on the road rather than on beaches, trails and railroad tracks! 6

  3. Wonderful! Love the Fishery and beautiful trails! How many women does it take to charge a car battery? Fantastic way to start your walk!

  4. So enjoyed this outlier from my usual email feed. Thanks for writing and posting. Good to know such a great experience is available so close to home.
