A rummy Steven and Karen after 23 hours of travel. Only 2 more hours to go!

Our checked bags arrived! In 2007 when we brought our kids on a 26 day trip to France & England we NEVER received our bags the entire trip!!!! We rarely check bags after that although Icelandair is very strict about carry-on dimensions so we had no choice but to check them in for this trip.
Meet my new Camino pilgrim friend! He’s feeling kind of wooden today.
Day 1 – Le Puy en Velay to Saint Privat d’Allier. 14.5 miles and 2063 feet of climbing.
Things are SO OLD here!! This working church was built in the 11th century.
Lunch break
Typical home architecture in this area.
Another new friend 💜

Steven and I are walking the Chemin Le Puy, also called The Via Podiensis, which is the Latin name for one of the four French pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It starts in Puy-en-Velay, as did we, and eventually gets to St John Pied de Port in the Pyrenees. (That is where we started our 500 mile, 6 week walk across Spain in the Fall of 2024.) Now we will only walk first two weeks of this French part, to get a taste of it.

  1. Hello SIL!! I am along for the journey in spirit. Looks FABULOUS!!! Be safe and healthy. Love, Nan

  2. Love seeing you both on your travels and reading the blogs! The architecture is lovely and such cute friends along the way! Bon Chemin!

It is a lot of fun to read about your hiking and biking travels. I hope this is another wonderful camino for you both!

    1. Thank you Priscilla! This surprisingly feels like I’m a short timer out here on the walk since we are only walking 2 weeks (as compared to last Fall’s 500 mile walk). We’ve met 4 people total who are walking all the way to Santiago — about 950 miles — and i must admit to feeling a little envious.

  4. What fun to receive an email with this link! Somehow I missed you were taking this trip, you love the Camino! I still hope to go on some portion after Yuki goes over the rainbow bridge, which I thought would be last year, maybe next year. Also a pilgrimmage trail in Japan on my list. Thanks for sharing your photos and experience with us, it makes me happy to see and read. And la belle France! Happy trails and see you (Karen, maybe Steven? )in September!

    1. Thanks Jill! We didn’t plan this trip until late April which is pretty late planning for us so maybe that’s why u didn’t hear about it. I DO like exploring Camino’s- feels like a good fit for me/us at this stage in life. After walking for 6 weeks last Fall on the Camino Frances’, this feels short, but that’s ok too. Walking feels like a fine way to see a country. We will end our trip with 5 days in Paris. See you at September’s end! And looking forward to it!

  5. I too had forgotten that I had signed up for the email notices.. I will enjoy following your travels over the next couple of weeks. Hope you post from Paris too.

  6. Hi Karen, I’ve been thinking of you two every day, hoping for terrain that suits each day’s ability and views and people that inspire you. Thanks for writing, your photos and descriptions are wonderful!
