One of the delights of a walking across Spain is the variety of experiences available to the pilgrim. One night we can be staying at a rustic hostel with a simple pilgrim’s dinner in the Spanish countryside and a few nights later enjoying wine and tapas in front of an elaborate cathedral in the cosmopolitan city of Burgos.
Over a thousand years ago the early travelers across Spain making pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela to visit St James remains often slept in cathedrals along the way. For most medieval pilgrims the journey to Santiago entailed a grueling journey of six months to one year. Pilgrims came with diverse motivations (like today) — seeking forgiveness, releasing burdens, praying, or healing. But long ago they also came to petition St. James for a certain blessing or their pilgrimage may have been prescribed by a priest as a penance for a crime committed.
Nancy, Jamie & Rob departed the Camino in Santo Domingo after 6 wonderful days of walking with us. They brought an upbeat, festive energy to our walk. We loved having them join us!

Day 7 – Puenta de la Reina to Estella. 14.4 miles & 1537 feet/elevation.
Day 8 – Estella to Los Arcos. 14.3 miles & 1372 feet
Day 9 – Los Arcos to Logroño. 18.3 miles & 1549 feet.
Day 10 – Logroño to Nájera. 18.7 miles & 1399 feet.
Day 11 – Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada. 13.6 miles & 1190 feet.
Day 12 – Rest Day at the lovely Parador Hotel. Nancy, Jamie & Rob head for Madrid and then home.
Day 13 – Santo Domingo to Belorado. 14.9 miles & 1249 feet.
Day 14 – Belorado to San Juan de Ortega. 15.5 miles & 1636 feet.
Day 15 – San Juan to Burgos. 16.6 miles & 527 feet.
Day 16 – Rest day to explore Burgos. Visited the wonderful Museum of Human Evolution & did an audio tour of the Burgos Cathedral.
Started walking the Meseta
Day 17 – Burgos to Hornillos del Camino. 13.8 miles & 459 feet
Day 18 – Hornillos to Castrojeriz. 12.2 miles & 596 feet. WONDERFUL stay at Albergue Orion and Korean pilgrims dinner!
Day 19 – Castrojeriz to Boadilla del Camino. 11.1 miles & 817 feet.
