Ponferrada to Sarria – Day 31 to 36

Our dear friends from Hood River, Eileen and Brian, joined us for 4 days of walking, starting in Ponferrada. They were troopers, maintaining fun and upbeat attitudes through rainstorms and lots of climbing and descending. We loved their company and are grateful that they walked with us in between their visits to Venice, Sicily, Madrid, and the south of France.

We got POURED on this day of walking between O Cebreiro and Triacastella

Leaving Ponferrada

We have moved into the last section of our hike — Galicia. It is a green, fertile land of proud, independent people. It has rain, artists, new cheeses, cows, vegetables, and lush countryside.

Galicia countryside
Sign outside a Camino stop that offered an abundance of food, couches to relax on, and a meditation room for a “donativo” or donation only.
Sweet stop in Galicia
This artist’s shop is on a dirt path on the Camino. “Pilgrims” are this sweet man’s only clients and this x-police officer from England makes his living painting. “I wasn’t happy as a police officer. I’m happy now.”
Yum!
Not so yummy!

    1. We loved having you and Brian! You were not only troopers through a very tough elevation and weather day, but also through limited food and lodging options. Thank you for showing up!

Great post and pics! Stay safe & healthy as you continue this amazing Journey!!!

  3. KCL, I have so enjoyed reading all of your posts and getting a real feel for your adventure through words and photos. You are amazing….and Steven as well. It is hard to believe you only have a few days of walking left. It appears to be all you were hoping for and more. Great that so many loved ones have traveled to share parts of this walk with you. Can’t wait for a Karen hug soon. Happy trails and safe travels. 💖

    1. Thanks Becky! It has been a great walk. In looking back it feels both like a very, very long walk, and like it passed in a flash. But i guess that’s like a lot of the way life feels! I look forward to a hug too!

Great to hear from you Karen. So happy Eileen and Brian could join you. Sorry for all the rain. Galicia and western Oregon are green for a reason! Enjoy the last 100km!

  5. It is great that you have been joined by family and friends for part of your journey; that will deepen your connections to them. Good that you live in western Oregon so you are not strangers to hiking in the rain!

    1. Thanks Priscilla. We were in the worst rainstorm of the trip when Eileen and Brian were with us, so relieved they were comfortable with rain too. They had great attitudes about it!

  6. Love the photos and journals Karen. Looks like such a lovely journey.. and to have friends join along the way! Hope you can enjoy a nice glass of albarino wine in this region of Galicia! (with dry feet!)

    1. Yes! I had both albarino and godello wines in Galicia and earlier macabeo (also calked viura) grapes were predominant in Rioja region wines. It was very fun to walk through vineyards while grapes were being harvested in the early days of the walk.
