Photo: Walk begins at Porto cathedral. Just follow the arrow and shell to Santiago

I will “attempt” to walk 173 miles from Porto Portugal to Santiago Spain on an established Camino Pilgrim’s route. I say attempt because I have an arthritic left hip that causes me discomfort and I have given myself permission to take a taxi to finish a long day of walking, if needed. But I honestly feel like this hip has it in “her” to carry me to Santiago. We shall see!

The clear philosophy embraced by pilgrims, both from my readings and those people I’ve already met in Porto and on the route, is that everyone needs to do the Camino in their own unique way, without judgment of themselves or by others. One’s Camino process is their own. And all processes are good and right.

So fully step into this Camino experience I will! I’ve chosen to travel part way around the world to do so. I’m nervous about my physical capacity and nervous about doing this alone. At the same time I am excited about doing this alone and hopeful that I will learn something about myself. I’m sure I will learn something about this strange and wonderful world.

Bom Camino!

First 6 km is walking along Douro River out of Porto, to the ocean

Lots of coastal boardwalks the first two Camino days. I walked 23 km (14 miles) the first day to Angeiras and 20 km the second to the Santa Andre’ hotel in the area of Santa Andre’. No blisters yet!
My first Camino friends — Ines and Helana from Porto area. They have done multiple Camino’s, starting when they were age 14 with their high school class

Camino lunch of baked local cod and cooked cabbage and green bean salad

Typical treats at a morning break
