Albergue Orion and the Meseta

Albergue Orion in Castrojeriz (day 18) is one of our favorite stops so far. It is run by a kind, welcoming proprietor, Daniel Perez, and his equally lovely employee, Mussafah, from Morocco. We were served a Korean Bulgogi bowl for dinner (very unusual in the Spanish countryside) and our clean, well kept room, with attention to detail and private bathroom, was only 55 euros. Orion, like many Albergues, offers dormitory beds for 15 euros.

The two women above are from Taiwan and they sat across from Steven and I at dinner. As we went around the table and talked about how we each heard about the Camino and why we were here, they told us they first heard about the Camino on a u-tube video and they are “impetuous” and that why they are here. They also blurted out that they thought Steven was “very handsome.” I believe he blushed! (And he is handsome!) They were delightful to share a meal with.

The middle part of the Camino Francés is on the Meseta. It is the largest geographical region in Spain, making up 40% of the country. It is a high plateau and offers walkers big skies with diverse colors and expansive clouds. There is a certain beauty in the wide open spaces and my mind is enjoying its own sense of openness and reflection as it engages with the endless horizons.

Well attended pilgrims dinner. Usually costs 15 euros with 3 courses served and a glass of red wine

Great post Karen and love hearing from you. Congrats on walking 1/2 way! Didn’t have any Korean bulgogi bowls 5 years ago. Keep enjoying the journey

  3. I’m glad each time I see that you have posted! Sounds like you and Steven are having a good time and meeting interesting people on the road. One thing that I had never heard anyone else mention is the murals on the Camino.

    1. ❤️💜 hello Alexia! So many wonderful walks in Europe, eh! Thanks for sharing your Italian walk with me/us earlier this season. Feeling grateful to be able to do this (although due to rain and “severe” winds we may hop on a bus today for the first time. Still figuring that out)

  6. Reading your posts and seeing the photos of all the new ”friends’ you are making along the way, makes me so happy. You are in a place where it seems the people of the world can come together and just enjoy each other…no predetermined biases!
