DAY 1 – Walking the Camino Francés

Only in France would they have a Baguette vending machine!

Orisson Cafe and Albergue

After all the dreaming and planning involved in making this day happen – day 1 of our 500 mile pilgrimage walk – we are here! I’m sitting at the Orisson Auberge, drinking mint tea, and enjoying this gorgeous view.

Charming St. Jean Pied de Port

Steven, my husband, and I are spending the next 42 days walking the Camino Francés. We started today in St. Jean Pied de Port France and have began our climb over the Pyrenees Mountains. Tomorrow we finish the climb, passing over Col Lopoeder (4486 feet). We will enter Spain and spend the night in Roncesvalles. We have sprinkled five rest days into the 42 and have three (maybe four) small groups of friends and family joining us for a few days of walking each. We are exited to welcome people we love to the Camino experience and look forward to their arrival!!

Rest Break

Pilgrims Dinner at the Albergue

Orisson staff invited diners to introduce themselves to the large group with their name, where they are from, and why they are walking the Camino. The walkers were from all over the world. Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Brazil, Latvia, Germany, England, Mexico, Canada, Columbia, and the USA. People listened so kindly and attentively as others shared. I think it created a playful, joyful, connected feeling in the group and there was a beautiful sense of shared humanity as, one by one, people spoke.

As you can imagine, I LOVED it!

Buen Camino
